Vietnam and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1973, and upgraded their ties to the level of Extensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia in 2014.

The two nations have maintained high-level meetings, with the highlights being visits to Vietnam in 2017 by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, and PM Shinzo Abe. The year also marked a new development step in the bilateral relations as the two countries issued a joint statement on deepening the Extensive Strategic Partnership during the official visit to Japan by PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Vietnam and Japan have closely and effectively coordinated in multilateral forums such as the UN, ASEAN, APEC and ASEM.

In 2017, Japan became the largest foreign investor in Vietnam, with total registered capital of 9.11 billion USD, equivalent to 25.4 percent of the total inflow of foreign direct investment in the Southeast Asian country.

Japan was also the largest ODA provider for Vietnam, and the fourth biggest trade partner of the country, with bilateral trade hitting 33.4 billion USD last year.
