On March 26, a Swedish patient was transferred to Ha Noi French Hospital by 115 ambulance after found fallen down in the street. At the time of arrival at the hospital, the patient was screened per the prevailing instructions and guidelines, but did he not have any symptoms nor did he report any epidemiological factors to suspect COVID-19.

As such, he was admitted to ER and consulted by the multispecialty team. The patient then refused further treatment due to financial reasons and left the hospital. At the hospital, the patient was moved in a wheelchair as he couldn’t walk by himself, hence limiting the probability of infection or contamination.

On March 30, the patient returned to the hospital but refused treatment for the same reasons. He left the hospital after 10-15 minutes.

On April 3, National Institute of Hygiene Epidemiology informed Ha Noi French Hospital that the patient had tested positive for COVID-19 and was identified as patient 237. As a precautionary measure, all HFH medical, nursing and administrative staff who had any contact with the patient were immediately identified and then tested by CDC at HFH on the same day. This morning, CDC Ha Noi informed that all tested negative. As a further precaution all staff concerned has been placed in quarantine for two weeks (from the date of contact).

All doctors, nurses and hospitality staff at all times used disposable personal protective equipment suitable for their involvement with the patient while in contact with, or caring for the patient. This patient was provided mask and offered sanitizer at the checking point before entering the building. As per standard protocol, all masks and personal protective equipment worn by medical staff were discarded as medical waste, the isolation examination room were thoroughly disinfected, strictly following infection control guidelines of Ministry of Health, Ha Noi Department of Health and CDC Ha Noi.

All staff who had indirect contact with patient 237 are classified and monitored as per instructions by the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention and Control. However, as those who had direct contact with patients are tested negative, the staff who had indirect contact with the patient don’t need to be home isolated under instructions of Ministry of Health.

Ha Noi French Hospital remains focusing on keeping its patients, staff and visitors safe, and to continue the care for its patients in the safest possible circumstances. As from March 7, Ha Noi French hospital has set up a health safety check outside the building that requires every person to be screened and classified before entering the hospital building. The screening procedure is fully in line with all official guidelines, including checking body temperatures and reporting any suspicious information by filling up COVID-19 Medical Questionnaire. The screening is applied to all hospital’s staff in the same way, too.

Ha Noi French Hospital’s Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control was established on February 1, taking on responsibility for updating regularly the epidemic situation in Vietnam and in the world for timely and effective measures to prevent the spread of the virus from patients to health workers and the community, following strictly the instructions of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.
