The newly confirmed patients are among 297 Vietnamese repatriated from the United Arab Emirates on flight VN0088 on May 3. The flight touched down at Can Tho Airport in the Mekong Delta and all passengers were quarantined in Bac Lieu province.

The Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City detected 17 positives and 280 negatives after all passengers tested for the novel coronavirus on May 7.

April 7 update has pushed the national infection tally to 288, of which 55 are still receiving treatment, and 21 have tested negative for the SARS-CoV-2 virus at least once.

By 6 am on May 8, a total of 16,525 people who have come close contact with confirmed patients or entered Vietnam from epidemic-hit areas have been placed into isolation. Meanwhile 233 patients (81%) have been declared to have fully recovered from the disease.

Among the total registered cases, 148 are imported ones and were kept in quarantine immediately upon their arrival in the country.

The country has so far reported no locally-transmitted cases and deaths, however, health officials have underlined the need to continue tightening controls on all arrivals from abroad as there will be more flights bringing Vietnamese citizens back home in line with their expectation. All new arrivals will be subject to a 14-day quarantine period to prevent infection in the community.
